The latest I, Cringley article has the ol' wheels turning. A gaggle of wireless routers running custom Linux installations has so many wonderful possibilities it makes my head hurt. Beyond just a self-configuring network with 16% edge nodes and the lovely cellphone-esque wireless connectivity that could supply to urban areas, imagine utilizing the computing power a mesh network could provide with some manner of ad-hoc clustering. A 200 MHz processor isn't that much by itself, but when you harness every router within three hops of your location we're talking about doing some interesting things. Why stop there? Each router can have a whole network of devices attached. Ethernet cameras, displays, any kind of automation really. The proper software, access control, etc and the wireless age is truly here.
Fry's trip.
